Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also attended the special programmes at the memorial service at the former Birla House that now houses the Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi on Martyr’s Day. It was at the Birla House that Gandhi was gunned down Jan 30, 1948, as he stepped out for the evening prayer meeting.

The memorial service began with nearly 500 students from various schools, orphanages and NGOs singing popular ‘bhajans’ to pay homage to Bapu, as gandhi was called. The children were joined by 50 differently-abled girls.

An inter-faith prayer service of all major religions of the country was conducted, followed by a musical tribute by Sufi singers Wadali brothers.

The prime minister’s wife Gursharan Kaur and Delhi’s Lt. Governor Tejendra Khanna were also present at the occasion.
