Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said he could not rule out that extremists would try to use the polls to “achieve their sordid goals”.

He also warned of possible terrorist attacks and ethnic tensions in the period leading to the Dec 4 polls.

President Dmitry Medvedev has said inter-ethnic violence was a threat to Russia’s stability.

Right-wing extremism in Russia has been a major cause for concern.
