New Delhi : Ahead of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to India, the US Monday said it planned to spend $100 million on clean energy projects in this country and underlined the need for closer cooperation between them to achieve sustainable development.
“We both (India and US) should work together to achieve sustainable development and I have never seen India neglecting this issue,” US Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel B. Poneman said at the US-India Energy Dialogue at The Energy and Resources Institute here.
The main agenda at the dialogue was to promote clean energy for a clean environment in the future.
“Growth in energy and fresh environment is not the concern of only US and India. It’s a worldwide phenomenon,” Poneman said.
In order to promote new renewable energy, US will start and fund 1,000 new projects in India.
“The main motive of both the countries is to increase nuclear energy so that the energy goals announced by US President Barack Obama are met by 2035. The goal is promote the economic development of the families in both the countries,” Poneman said.
“Both the US and India need better technology and best minds so that nuclear energy can be increased and emissions be reduced,” he added.
Apart from sustainable energy, the menace of nuclear terrorism was also discussed.
Stressing the importance of Indo-US relationship in tacking this menace, Poneman said: “The prime minister of India and the US president need to coordinate and share vital information with each other in order to fight this problem.”
