New Delhi : The central government Wednesday set up a committee to look into the matters related to the closure of Tirupur textile units in Tamil Nadu and find ways to revive them, an official statement said.
Textiles Minister Anand Sharma announced the formation of the committee after meeting Environment and Forests Minister Jayanthi Natarajan here.
Sharma said the committee, headed by Textiles Secretary Rita Menon, would find the ways to revive the textile units of Tirupur, which are closed because of environmental concerns.
“There is a need to find an interim short-term solution to reopen these units. The committee will also work for finding an enduring long-term solution,” said Sharma, who is also commerce and industry minister, according to the statement.
Menon visited Tirupur Monday to review the situation on the spot.
Over 700 textiles units engaged mainly in dyeing and bleaching business have been shut at Tirupur since January on a Madras High Court order.
The court has ordered to close dyeing and bleaching units because they were polluting the Noyyal river flowing through the textile city.
Sharma said the government was trying to find a way to revive the industry because a large number of people have lost their livelihood because of the closure of the textile units.
