The decision to remove Vastanvi over his comments in praise of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s developmental policies was taken Sunday by the powerful Majlis-e-Shoora.

“There is no case against Vastanvi sahab. The three-member committee has given him a clean chit so there is no case to remove him,” a supporter of Vastanvi said.

“The report of the enquiry committee is also incomplete. All of his supporters want to go to the Supreme Court,” he said.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Kamal Farooqui, however, said that the Supreme Court has no role to play in this.

“How can the Supreme Court come into the picture? The decision has been taken by the (Majlis-e-) Shoora, if he goes to the court it will be very unfortunate,” Farooqui said.

“These institutions function in a democratic manner, whether the report was complete or incomplete. The Shoora has taken the decision with majority so where is the scope,” he asked adding: “Majlis-e-Shoora is totally competent to take the decision and I am quite sure they must have taken all aspects in account.”

Farooqui said the “disturbance” was being created by those who wanted to “destabilise” the institution.

“Those who want to destabilise the Deoband are doing these things,” he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy said: “Vastanvi has been removed for appreciating the Gujarat chief minister, he was possibly removed for speaking the truth.”

Those against Vastanvi, however, said that his comments favouring Modi were not worth forgiving.

“He has appreciated such a person that he can not be forgiven,” a student from the Darul Ullom said reacting to the decision.

“It is an academic institution, those having a political inclination are not fit to be there,” All India Muslim Personal Law Board member S.Q.R. Ilyas said.
