Islamabad : Twitter is abuzz with the brutal murder of Pakistani journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad, with one user asking the UN to impose sanctions against the ISI that is said to have killed him.
Horacio Calderon wrote that Shahzad was “horribly tortured before killed. Where is the phantom UN to apply sanctions against ISI?”
Another tweet said: “Pakistani intelligence agency and Taliban: a deal w/the devil. No one in control.”
The body of 40-year-old Shahzad, correspondent of Asia Times Online who went missing Sunday in Islamabad, was found in a canal in Punjab province Tuesday.
Officials said the body bore visible marks of torture.
Venigma M.L. Kingsley tweeted: “Shahzad, found 31 May, outside Islamabad, beaten and tortured: may you Rest In Peace.”

Shahzad, who extensively reported on Islamist groups, is believed to have been picked up by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for alleging that terrorists attacked the PNS Mehran naval base in Karachi May 22 after the navy did not free sailors held for suspected militant links.

On the murdered journalist’s book “Inside Al Qaeda and the Taliban”, Arif Rafiq noted in his tweet: “Shahzad’s book was at #12,000+ a few hrs ago on Amazon’s bestsellers ranking. It’s now #3,127. Would be nice to see it rise more.”
