Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Wednesday admitted the state government’s appeal against the acquittal of 50 accused and issued notices to them in a case related to 2002 riots in Anand district.
The government challenged a trial court’s September 2010 order which freed the 50 people from all charges in the case.
While admitting the government appeal, the division bench of Justice R.R. Tripathi and Justice P.P. Bhatt issued bailable warrants against the accused.
Three people were killed in police firing and residential, commercial properties were set on fire, and places of worship were destroyed March 1, 2002, in Anand.
Special Public Prosecutor J.M. Panchal said: “The division bench has admitted the matter and issued bailable warrants against around 50 persons in the case.”
He said the accused people were charged for offences including rioting, theft, house trespass, causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty, and unlawful assembly to cause death.
