Tamil Nadu asked for report on assault on Dalit boy

New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHCR) has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government after a media reports alleged that a Dalit boy in the state was beaten up for fetching water from a public tap.

A statement by the commission Friday said that the boy was stopped from fetching water at Karikkilipalayam in the state by three women. When he protested, he was thrashed by them.

The boy had to be admitted to hospital. The statement also said that the village is reeling under extreme water scarcity.

“Taking suo motu cognizance of the media report June 14, the commission has issued notice to the chief secretary of the Tamil Nadu government, calling for a report on the matter within four weeks,” the statement said.

The commission has sought information on whether any criminal case has been registered against the accused, if any relief or compensation has been given to the victim, and what action has been taken to prevent such cases of discrimination against Dalits.
