US, Pak, Afghan generals hold security talks

Islamabad : Pakistan army said that senior military representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Coalition Forces in Afghanistan met in Kabul on Monday and reviewed the current security situation along the Pak-Afghan Border.

Measures to improve effectiveness of ongoing operations in the respective areas also came under discussion, a Pakistan army statement said.

“Steps for better coordination and enhanced cooperation to avoid misunderstandings as regard to the border security were also discussed,” it said.

Forum reiterated the resolve and commitment to restore peace and stability in the area.

The commission is a recurring event, and the Monday’s meeting was the 34th since the inaugural session conducted in Islamabad in 2003.

Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of the Afghan General Staff, General Sher Mahammed Karimi and General David H. Petreaus, Commander International Security Assistance Force, Afghanistan headed the respective delegations.

The talks held at a time when tension heightened along the Pak-Afghan border as both sides accused each other of cross border infiltration and shelling.

Pakistan army on Monday said that hundreds of militants entered Pakistani territory from Afghan soil and attacked border check posts, killing 50 Pakistani security personnel and injuring 80 others.

Afghan government says that Pakistani forces fired some 450 rockets into Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar and Nangrahar provinces and killed nearly 40 people including 12 children.

Officials said that Pakistan’s army chief also met Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul on Monday and assured the Afghan leader to investigate the border shelling.
