The increase in the operating expenses is Rs.1,190 crore, or 1.8 percent over 2009-10, Minister of State for Railways Bharatsinh Solanki told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

Railways are making all-out efforts for augmenting traffic earnings and containing operating expenditure, he said.

“The efforts include introduction of new trains, rationalisation of fare and freight structure, better asset management and so on to capture more traffic.”

Besides, initiatives are also being taken to generate revenues through commercial utilisation of land and publicity, Solanki said.
