“The tragic nuclear incidents in Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake and tsunami should make us revisit strategies for nuclear safety, learning lessons from these experiences,” Manmohan Singh said at the 10th India Today conclave.

“I have already ordered a thorough review (of the nuclear safety system in India) by the department of atomic energy,” said the prime minister.

India operates 20 nuclear power reactors and the disaster that crippled four nuclear reactors in Japan have raised concerns about the safety of atomic energy.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) that operates these reactors has said Indian nuclear plants maintain the highest levels of safety as per international norms and have withstood major natural disasters in the past.
