New Delhi : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Friday refused to answer queries on the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying he would give his explanation on his alleged role in the riots in the Supreme Court.
“The Supreme Court is seized of the matter (Gujarat riots). I will give my explanation in the court, which is the appropriate forum ” Modi said when asked at the ‘India Today conclave’ whether his image has been tarnished by the allegations of his role behind the riots.
To another question whether he would explain his role to the general public through a forum like the conclave, Modi said: “Even if I explain, the exercise of allegations would continue.”
About 2,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in the Gujarat communal riots, when Modi was the chief minister.
Modi said after the 2002 riots there have been no major communal riots in Gujarat.
“In the wake of the attack on the Akshardham temple or after the blasts in Ahmedabad in 2008, the state remained peaceful,” Modi said.
