Kolkata: The Election Commission (EC) has directed the transfer of a West Bengal police officer as a criminal case is pending against him, a senior official said Sunday.
The EC has directed the transfer of Sankha Biswas, officer-in-charge of Barbani police station in Burdwan district, and exempted him from election duty as a case filed by a former constable in 2008 is pending in a Durgapur court, said Burdwan District Magistrate and District Election Officer (DEO) Onkar Singh Meena.
According to sources, former constable Satyakam Maity had filed a case alleging that Biswas ransacked his house and assaulted him and his wife after they helped publish articles in a weekly newspaper exposing Biswas’s corrupt practices.
It was alleged that the police even refused to file Maity’s report.
“We have received the directive and a list of three officers has been forwarded for replacement. The commission will choose the officer for Barbani police station, who will take charge Monday,” Meena said.
