“They celebrated the festival from 8 a.m. to noon with colours made by them,” Tihar Jail spokesperson Surendar Gupta told IANS. Senior jail officials also celebrated Holi with the inmates.

Irrespective of their religion, the inmates joined the celebrations of the festival of colours. “No one was forced to join. They celebrated on their own,” said Gupta.

“The inmates had special food. The menu included halwa and sweets, vegetables, parathas and pulao,” said Gupta.

The inmates used arrowroot powder and flower petals along with food grade colours and natural fragrances to prepare gulal and coloured water for hurling at each other.

At various sub-jails, there were musical programmes and “hasya kavi sammelan”. “At one of the jails, there was a workshop where inmates were educated about the importance of Holi and why it is celebrated,” said Gupta.
