New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Friday said it will complain to the Election Commission about a Trinamool Congress parliamentarian who was found carrying Rs.57 lakh in cash at the Delhi airport.
“We are going to lodge a complaint with the Election Commission based on the media report. We will ask the commission to take appropriate action,” CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here.
Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member from Jharkhand Kanwar Deep Singh was stopped at the Indira Gandhi International Airport Thursday night after he was found carrying cash worth Rs.57 lakh.
He was questioned by the air intelligence unit of the income tax department, but was later allowed to go after Singh told the officials that the cash belonged to the company Alchemist Group, which he owns.
“He was going to Guwahati, where the elections are to take place. I don’t know how he was allowed to go,” Karat said.
He, however, added that the discovery of cash may be a part of the Election Commission’s exercise of seizing illegal money going into the elections.
“The EC had a meeting with all parties and said that it would check for illegal money going in elections. I think this is a part of it that he was stopped,” Karat said, adding that money has also been seized at several other places, including Tamil Nadu.
The EC has directed state officials to keep a strict vigil on the movement of cash without proper documents in the wake of the upcoming assembly elections in five states.
