Russia started actively monitoring radiation levels in the Far East after radioactive substances leaked from the blast-hit Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant in Japan.

“Radiation levels in the Sakhalin Region are within the norm as of 9.00 a.m. local time. There were no deviations from the norm in all districts of the region,” the spokesman said.

On Monday, Greenpeace suggested extending the evacuation zone around Japan’s Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant from 20 to 40 km due to high radiation levels.

Highly radioactive water was found for the first time outside one of the reactor buildings of the plant Monday and radiation has also been detected in the air and sea.

Workers are still battling to restore power and cooling systems at the plant, which was damaged by a powerful earthquake and ensuing tsunami March 11.
