An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia issued the notice on a petition filed by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), which is affiliated to the Communist Party of India-Marxist.

The petitioner contended that the use of Endosulfan has serious health hazards.

Endosulfan is an off-patent organochlorine insecticide and acaricide. The colourless solid has emerged as a highly controversial agrichemical due to its acute toxicity.

According to DYFI, several studies had documented that endosulfan could also affect human development.
