Rohit Verma, 28, son of Vijay Kumar Verma, and Devender Singh, 29, the worker, have been rescued while Velu, 32, Ramesh, 25, and Manohar, 52, were nabbed from Tirunelveli near Madurai in Tamil Nadu Saturday in a combined operation of Delhi and Tamil Nadu police forces.

According to a police official, Verma, a Rohini resident, reported May 1 that he received a call demanding Rs.1 crore for the release of his son Rohit and his worker Devender, who had gone to Madurai.

The amount was increased to Rs.2 crore later, said the official.

Rohit and Devender reached Madurai April 29 and called home to say they had arrived safely.

“We coordinated with Tamil Nadu police and the three were arrested from Tirunelveli today (Saturday). The victims have been rescued safely,” said Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police B.S. Jaiswal.

“During the interrogation, Velu said he came into contact with one Poliah, who told him about some persons in Delhi who are experts in gambling. Both Velu and Poliah went to Verma’s house in Delhi and fixed a gambling on May 1 in Madurai,” said the officer.

“Verma asked his son to go to Madurai along with his worker. The duo reached Madurai April 29. Next day they were taken to a farmhouse, the venue for gambling. But gambling was just a ploy of kidnapping,” added the officer.

The police have recovered two air guns, three knives and three bags containing the clothes of the victims.

The search is still on for the remaining culprits, he added.
