Kuala Lumpur : The international fight against terrorism should not be misinterpreted as a religious issue.
Neither should it be viewed as a conflict between the East and the West when taking into account, the killing of Osama bin Laden, said State Secretary for Political Affairs (Foreign Ministry and European Integration), Republic of Croatia, Dr Mario Nobilo.
He believed that the Al-Qaeda leader and his followers were motivated by the social situation of the young generation which wished to have more prosperity and balance-sharing within society in the region.
However, he said Osama’s death would be a symbol of value in the terrorist chief’s fight, regardless of how he was said to have masterminded Al-Qaeda’s actions.
“Therefore, I do not believe that the end of this symbol is the end of the problems because there would be revenge most likely to be taken somewhere…” he said in his public lecture, ‘From Peacekeeping to Peacemaking – A Story of Transformation in the Former Yugoslavia’ here today.
Dr Mario said Al-Qaeda was moving towards inspiring countries like Libya, Tunisia, Syria and Egypt but could not influence them as they were different in terms of political tradition, ethnicity and religious manner.
Osama, the face of global terrorism and architect of the Sept 11, 2001 attacks, was killed in a firefight with elite US forces in Pakistan last Monday.
