New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday said it was “historically weak” in the states where elections were held after the party failed to reach double figures.
“This is an elementary thing in politics, some states are influential areas for some parties, in some they don’t have much stake. In four out of the five states, the impact of our party has been weak historically,” Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley told reporters.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, in a press conference, took a dig at the BJP for it not being able to reach double-figure mark in the polls.
“The national party which claims to form the national government couldn’t reach the double-figure mark in the assembly election,” Mukherjee said.
The BJP won five seats in Assam and one in West Bengal. It drew blank in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.
“This argument was applicable on Mr. Pranab Mukherjee’s party a few months back when Bihar elections took place,” Jaitley said hitting back at the Congress.
“Those who have won the elections and will form government in their states, we wish them the best and hope that the trust people have enshrined in them they will prove worthy to it,” Jaitley said.
Commenting on the Left losing in both West Bengal and Kerala, Jaitley called it a reflection of Communist ideology being defeated across the world.
“The Marxist ideology has been getting weaker across the whole world, and the impact is now visible in India,” he said.
