Hyderabad : As many as six express and seven passenger trains were cancelled after a truck fell on to a goods train from an overhead bridge in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district Monday morning, killing the driver of the truck and damaging the rail track.
Rail traffic between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam in coastal Andhra Pradesh was thrown out of gear following the accident near Rajahmundry.
According to police, the truck carrying iron rods lost control and fell on to the goods train, damaging the train engine and two bogies.
Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Vijayawada railway station as authorities announced cancellation of train services.
The trains coming from Chennai and Hyderabad and proceeding towards Visakhapatnam were also stopped at Vijayawada, causing severe inconvenience to passengers.
A railway spokesman said Visakha, Gautami, Godavari, Tirumala and Shirdi express trains were running four hours behind schedule.
These trains will continue their journey once the damaged track is restored.
The cancelled trains include Ratnachal, Simhadri, Tenali-Visakha Janambhoomi Express, Visakha-Vijayawada, Rajhamundry-Visakha, Machilipatnam-Visakha, Tanaku-Visakha, Kakinada-Tirupati, Tirupati-Kakinada and Kakinada-Vijayawada passenger trains.
