Mohali : After a nearly nine-year-long trial, a state vigilance special court has acquitted Punjab assembly Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon in a corruption case.
Kahlon was charged with corruption, cheating, forgery and abuse of his official position as then state rural development and panchayats minister in the recruitment of 909 panchayat secretaries between 1997 and 2002. He and 14 others were booked in the case June 14, 2002.
Mohali Special Judge (vigilance) Rajinder Aggarwal Wednesday acquitted Kahlon, a senior leader of the ruling Akali Dal in Punjab, of all the charges due to lack of evidence. There were 45 witnesses, including senior government officials, for the prosecution but most of them turned hostile.
