Kanimozhi’s arrest due to apex court: BJP

By IANS,

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday said DMK leader Kanimozhi’s arrest was due to the fact that Supreme Court was monitoring the multi-million-rupee 2G spectrum case. The BJP also demanded that the apex court should similarly monitor the corruption charges that have surfaced in the Commonwealth Games (CWG).

“These arrests and actions have been taken in the 2G case as the Supreme Court is monitoring the CBI inquiry. CBI had been investigating the case for 13 months since 2008 but there were no results,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

“Action was visible and became feasible in the case only when the Supreme Court started monitoring the case and asked for progress reports every week,” Javadekar added.

Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi, and Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar, named as co-conspirators in the multi-million-rupee 2G spectrum case, were Friday sent to Tihar Jail after a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here dismissed their bail pleas.

On Friday, the CBI also filed a charge sheet against nine people, including sports administrator Suresh Kalmadi, and two companies in a case related to alleged irregularities in the preparations for the 2010 CWG.

The charge sheet, the first in the case, runs into 36 pages. It includes the names of CWG Organising Committee (OC) heavyweights Suresh Kalmadi, Lalit Bhanot and V.K. Verma. The case deals with irregularities in awarding a contract for timing equipment to a Swiss company for the mega event held last year.

The accused have been charged with cheating, criminal conspiracy, and corruption under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
