Ajit Kumar Pal, 17, a native of the adjoining Varanasi district, jumped before a passenger train near Trilochan station.

“Initial probe reveals that the victim did not fare well in his CBSE board exams the results of which were declared Monday,” Railway Police inspector I.D. Singh told reporters in Jaunpur, some 200 km from Lucknow.

“No suicide note was found. We have learnt that Ajit left his home in Varanasi Monday morning after informing his family that he would return after checking out his results in a cyber cafe,” he added.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the boy, who was sitting on a bench, stood up when he saw the train coming.

“Before they could do anything, he jumped before the train and was killed on the spot,” said Singh.
