Nagpur (Maharashtra): Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said Thursday that Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and his family members have been provided adequate security.
Chavan’s statement comes in the wake of revelations made by the self-confessed plotter of the 26/11 terror strike and Pakistani American David Coleman Headley in a Chicago court this week, of threats to the lives of Thackeray and his son Uddhav.
The chief minister said security has also been arranged for prominent personalities, including top politicians and celebrities, and vital installations in Mumbai.
“We are awaiting more details from the US on the ongoing trial of (David Coleman) Headley. Thereafter, in consultation with the central government, we shall take a decision on enhancing security measures,” Chavan told reporters here, the second capital of the state.
In his deposition in the US court, Headley is said to have revealed terror plans to target Mumbai airport and the Siddhi Vinayak temple in Dadar in central Mumbai. He also claimed to have carried out a recce of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre here.
Headley’s statements came during the recording of his testimony as a prosecution witness in the trial of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack which has opened this week at Chicago’s Dirksen Federal Building.
A co-accused in the attack, along with his friend Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian of Pakistani origin, Headley told Judge Harry D. Leinenweber that he visited the Shiv Sena Bhavan, the party headquarters in Dadar.
