Bangalore : As part of its flood relief programme, global software major Infosys Technologies Ltd has built and handed over 279 more houses in Raichur and Yadgir districts of north Karnataka where flash floods in 2009 affected millions of people, the company said Friday.
“We have delivered 279 houses built across three villages in Raichur and Yadigir districts, which are in addition to 1,744 houses built at a cost of Rs.100,000 each and delivered in Gulbarga district in April,” a company statement said.
The company, its not-for profit organisation Infosys Foundation and its five co-founders donated Rs.30 crore for the massive housing project under a government sponsored scheme to provide shelter to flood victims.
“The houses were handed over at Chintamana Doddi in Raichur district and Tinthini in Yadgir district. With the latest handover, the company has built and delivered 1,249 houses in Gulbarga, 229 in Raichur, 425 in Dharwad, 70 in Belgaum and 50 in Yadgir district till date,” the statement noted.
Additional 239 houses in Yadgir district are at various stages of completion and will be delivered in June.
The Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama at Belgaum partnered with Infosys Foundation in constructing the houses.
Speaking at the event, Infosys Foundation trustee Srinath Batni said, “We are happy to mitigate the hardship of the beneficiaries due to the unprecedented floods. We are hopeful this gesture will help the affected people to resume their normal life and benefit them from the model layout and houses provided.”
The state government provided layouts with roads, water connection, community space and playgrounds. Built on 250 square feet plots, each house has separate toilet with a septic tank.
“Apart from houses, the company has provided accessories such as solar lantern, books for the schools children of beneficiaries.”
The State Bank of India has agreed to open a no-frill account for each beneficiary.
