New Delhi: The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) said Thursday that the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), a frontal organisation of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in Kerala, was obstructing distribution of daily Malayala Manorama and its other publications in Calicut city and neighbouring areas for the last 13 days.
The INS called upon the CPI-M to ask its cadres to desist from such action.
The INS, in a statement issued by its secretary general V. Shankaran, said the CITU members had also started blocking bundles of daily Mathrubhumi.
“The disruption of supply of these two newspapers to readers has spread to neighbouring Kannur district as well. This is a direct attack on the freedom of press and the right to information,” the statement said.
“The Indian Newspaper Society calls upon CPI-M to direct its cadres to desist from denying the right to the people to get newspaper of their choice,” said INS president Ashish Bagga.
