Jammu: The Congress unit of Jammu district, chaired by its president Om Chopra, rubbished as “baseless and politically motivated” National Conference leader Sheikh Mustafa Kamal’s anti-Congress diatribe.
Mustafa Kamal had said that the Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah-Indira Gandhi Accord of 1975 was never signed. He had also charged the Congress with “betraying promises made to the people of Kashmir”.
The Congress charged its ruling alliance partner National Conference with ingratitude while recalling 1975 when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was given power on a platter despite the party having a two-thirds majority in the state assembly.
Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, who was in political wilderness for 22 years, was handed over power by the Congress, having a two-thirds majority in the assembly in February 1975 under the Sheikh-Indira Accord, which made Sheikh give up the demand for plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir and accept the post of chief minister.
Om Chopra said the party “strongly condemns the sheer distortion and misrepresentation of historical events”.
The Congress meeting reminded the National Conference leadership that they did not pose any question when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was handed over power in 1975 in furtherance of the 1975 accord, when “despite Congress enjoying 2/3 majority in the assembly”, it handed over power to Sheikh Abdullah and Congress also vacated two assembly seats to accommodate Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and his aide Mirza Afzal Beg.
