New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday refused to be drawn into a debate on former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s report on Kudankulam nuclear plant, but said it was the duty of the central government to allay safety fears.
“It is the duty of the government to allay the fears, if there is any truth or unfounded fears and assure the nation on the safety of the people,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters here.
“Kalam is a respected scientist. But we cannot comment, as we have not seen his 32-page report on Kudankulam,” he said when asked for comments on the former president’s report.
Kalam Monday vouched for the safety of the proposed Kudankulam nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu, where a protest is underway by local residents against the facility.
Insisting that there appeared to be some “legitimate” concerns on the safety of the nuclear plant, Javadekar said there was a need to look into them.
Some countries that were exporting technology to the Kudankulam plant have stopped doing so, as they are not satisfied with some issues, he said, adding that they were not going ahead with their own projects.
“Kalam has already said he is not a mediator between the locals and the government,” Javadekar said.
Kalam visited the Kudankulam plant, which has become controversial over people’s concerns of safety following the Japanese Fukushima nuclear plant accident in the wake of an earthquake and tsunami.
