New Delhi : With 63 primary schools in the capital lacking drinking water supplies, the civic agency wrote a letter to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Wednesday to take the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to task as it is responsible for water supply in over 1,000 MCD schools.
“Due to non-cooperation of the DJB, there are 63 schools out of a total of 1,729 MCD schools where there is no drinking water facility. In these schools, there is even no DJB water connection. The water pipeline is also very far away from the school,” Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) education department chairman Mahendra Nagpal wrote in a letter to Dikhsit.
Back in March, the MCD had issued a precautionary advisory to its students to get water from home as the water supply was contaminated. BJP-led MCD’s Public Health Committee had alleged that 18 percent of water supplied by the Delhi Jal Board was contaminated.
“In some schools where there is connection, the water supply is contaminated, affecting the health of our students. Not only this, the water tankers also come very often. The CM should taken an action so that the interests of students are taken care of,” Nagpal said to Diksit.
