In a meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, with Obama Saturday, Hu said the Asia-Pacific region, which has “great vitality” and potential for development, should be an important area for active China-US cooperation, the China Daily reported Sunday.

Hu met the US president at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting.

He said the world was experiencing complicated changes with increasing uncertainty, instability in economic recovery and regional security threats.

The Chinese president said Beijing needs to maintain dialogue and cooperative partnership with Washington to properly settle sensitive issues.

Obama said the two nations would talk about bilateral trade economy, regional security and other issues, including climate change.

Although there were areas the two countries “will continue to have differences” in, Obama said he has confidence that bilateral ties will develop in a constructive way based on mutual respect and benefit.

As the two largest economies in the world, their cooperation was not only important to both countries but also to the whole world, he said.

China and the US now stand as each other’s second largest trade partners, with trade volume rising to $385 billion in 2010 since they established diplomatic ties in 1979.

The US continues to be the No.1 source of foreign direct investment for China.
