Shanghai : One in every four permanent residents of China’s Shanghai city was aged 60 years or above in 2010, a latest census has shown.
A total of 3.31 million permanent residents, or 23.4 percent of the city’s total, were found older than 60 years, says the census, conducted last year by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Population and Family Planning.
The ratio was only 19.6 percent in 2005.
In 2010, the city had a total population of over 23 million, including 14 million permanent residents and a floating population of 9 million who had lived in Shanghai for over half-a-year, according to the census.
The floating population, or the people who stay at a place for a brief period of time, increased by 5.5 million in the 10 years to 2010 as more rural migrants moved to the country’s financial and business hub in search of higher-paid jobs and presumably better life.
