This was the last of 12 shipments of nuclear waste from French nuclear reactors to Gorleben in northeastern Germany in recent years, as the contract between the two sides are not expected to be extended after it expires this year.

Tens of thousands people are expected to demonstrate against the shipment in and around Gorleben, Xinhua reported.

Germany has decided to close its all 17 nuclear plants by 2022, marking Germany the first major industrial power abandoning such plants.
