Mainz, 15th in the table, started off confidently against Bayern. Mainz midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz shocked the guests when he exploited a long pass opening the score from penalty area in the 10th minute.

The German giants recovered in the 55th minute as Belgian defender Daniel van Buyten headed home a cross from a free kick to level the score.

Mainz took the lead once again in the 64th minute thanks to a powerful shot from 20 metres away by defender Daniel Caliguri. Bayern had another setback in the 74th minute as Mainz defender Niko Bungert headed home a corner to seal the deal.

Van Buyten’s grabbed a consolation goal for Bayern five minutes later. It is the second loss for the record champions, which has resulted in Bayern slipping from first to third position with 28 points while Mainz jumped from 15th to 13th position with 15 points.

“We were diligent, smart and aggressive. A huge compliment to my team,” Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel said.

Bayern sports director Christian Nerlinger said: “Unfortunately, we see a negative trend we have only won three out of the last five matches,” Xinhua reported.

At the other match Sunday, Bremen sealed a 2-0 win thanks to goals from midfielder Aaron Hunt and defender Naldo.
