Global retail stores seen only in 23 out of 53 eligible cities

New Delhi : With states now to decide whether or not they will permit global multi-brand retailers set up their stores, the going appears smooth in just 23 out of 53 eligible cities, given the political reactions of each state government.

Among the conditions, the government has permitted multi-brand retail stores with up to 51 percent foreign only in cities that have a population of over one million people. As per the 2001 Census, which will form the basis for entry, 53 cities are eligible.

Here are the cities, state-wise, where such stores appear possible:

– Jammu and Kashmir (1 City): Srinagar

– Chandigarh (1 City): Chandigarh

– Haryana (1 City): Faridabad

– Delhi (1 City): National Capital Territory

– Rajasthan (3 Cities): Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota

– Maharashtra (6 Cities): Greater Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Vasai Virar City and Aurangabad

– Andhra Pradesh (3 Cities): Hyderabad, Greater Vishakapatnam and Vijayawada

Kerala (7 Cities): Kochi, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Malappuram, Thiruvanananthapuram, Kannur and Kollam

Here are the cities, state-wise, where there is opposition by the state governments:

– Punjab (2 Cities): Ludhiana and Amritsar

– Uttar Pradesh (7 Cities): Kanpur, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Agra, Varanasi, Meerut and Allahabad

– Bihar (1 City): Patna

– West Bengal (2 Cities): Kolkata and Asansol

– Jharkhand (3 Cities): Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Ranchi

– Chhattisgargh (2 Cities): Ranchi and Raipur

– Madhya Pradesh (4 Cities): Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur and Gwalior

– Gujarat (4 Cities): Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot

– Karnataka (1 City): Bangalore

– Tamil Nadu (4 Cities): Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli
