We are paid to work, says Sibal on parliament logjam

New Delhi : As the opposition continued to disrupt parliament for the sixth day Tuesday, union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said parliamentarians get paid for working for public good and not doing so was a violation of their oath to the constitution.

“It is our job to work, we get paid for it. It is not just issue of money, it is an issue of public service,” said an angry Sibal when requested for comments about the continuous disruptions in parliament since the 21-day winter session opened Nov 22.

“Having taken an oath to the Constitution, our job is to discuss, debate and inform. If we do not do that, then in a sense, we are not doing things consistent to the oath that we have taken,” he told reporters outside parliament.

Asked about the opposition demand to roll back the cabinet decision on Foreign Direct Investment in the retail sector, he said: “I am only to talk about what we are supposed to do here, it is not for me to comment on anybody.”

Sibal also refused to comment on the Lokpal bill issue.

“I have refused to comment on these issues. Please do not seek to extract a comment from me,” he added.

Team Anna, led by Anna Hazare, has threatened it would campaign against the Congress in the five assembly polls next year if the Lokpal bill is not passed in the current session of parliament. The bill aims to check corruption in high places.
