SAHMAT observes 75 years of Progressive Writers’ Association

New Delhi : The Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT) will organise a three-day seminar beginning Thursday on the ‘legacy and relevance of the progressive cultural movement in India’ on the 75th anniversary of the Progressive Writers’ Association.

The Oct 13-15 seminar will be held at the Teen Murti Library to recall the contribution of the association that was formed in Lucknow in 1936. Speakers will present papers on literature, cinema, theatre, music, dance, photography, print and journalism.

“We are also planning a small exhibition of vintage works by Sunil Janah, Chittaprosad, IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association) photos and journals, books and publications. Films from the period will be screened every evening, and there will be a lot of rare books on sale,” SAHMAT member Ram Rahman said.

The seminars will be accompanied by the screenings of progressive movies like “Dharti Ke Lal”, “Neecha Nagar” and “Komal Gandhar”.
