Another 4,000 people across the country needed hospital treatment, the Daily Express reported Monday citing figures released by the department of health.

Central heating boilers, gas cookers and gas fires were the main reasons.

More than 43 percent of gas consumers do not have their appliances checked regularly, while one in 10 never checked them.

Carbon monoxide gas has no smell, colour or taste and is almost impossible to detect. So victims do not realise they are in danger until it is too late, according to the Gas Safe Register, the official registration scheme for natural gas appliances in the country.
