Bhopal : Sandeep Dikshit, Congress MP and son of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, accidentally left behind a bag containing Rs.10 lakh in cash in a Bhopal-bound train Thursday, police said. However, he claimed the money belonged to his friend.
The Congress MP and his wife Mona boarded the Bhopal Express in Delhi Wednesday evening and got off in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh the next morning.
After arriving here, the train was taken to the yard for cleaning, where a cleaner, Bhagwan Das, saw the bag under a seat and alerted the railway police.
“When I was about to clean the C1 coach, I found a black leather bag. It was light weight and when I checked, I found money inside. I handed it over to authorities,” Das told IANS.
The berth was booked in the name of the Congress MP and his wife.
Speaking to IANS, Superintendent of Police (railway) I.P. Arjariya said: “The amount was first received by RPF (Railway Protection Force) and later brought to the railway police station. We have registered a case and have sent the money to court.”
Dikshit, who reached Bhopal to sort out the matter, told the railway police that the bag belonged to his “good friend” Jayesh Mathur, who was travelling in another coach of the train and left it with him for safe keeping.
“It is just that we forget to hand it over to him at Jhansi,” he said.
Mathur accepted the money belonged to him and said it was meant for booking a flat here.
“As soon as I came to know that the bag was left behind in the train, I went to railway police office. But police are saying that only the person under whose berth the bag was recovered can claim it. The money can be taken back through court only,” added Mathur.
