Lucknow: Nineteen year old Mahtab Alam, a first year BTech student of IIT-Kanpur was found hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room on Thursday. Authorities claimed it to be a case of suicide. Police was informed while the body was sent for post-mortem.
Mahtab, a resident of Kannauj district in Uttar Pradesh had taken admission in IIT-Kanpur two months back and was a student of Material Science and Engineering. He was allotted room no. 307. On Thursday his body was found hanging from the ceiling of his room. Why he took the extreme step is not known yet.
His friends were the first to notice his body hanging from the ceiling. The hostel warden and police were also subsequently informed. The IIT-K authorities immediately constituted a four-member committee to probe the matter and reported the incident to Kalyanpur police station. The committee has been asked to submit its report within a week. IIT authorities ruled out any ragging incident which forced him to take the extreme step. Nine students including two girls have committed suicide in IIT-Kanpur since 2005.
