New Delhi: Many people were more than hopeful that Delhi blast accused will get sympathy of the local community and he will win the Zakir Nagar ward of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). But the results of MCD polls announced today brought smile back on the sitting Congress councilor Shoaib Danish as he retained the seat.
Ziaur Rahman, who was picked within days after the Batla House encounter of Sept. 19, 2008 and made accused in Delhi serial blasts and some other terror blasts of that year, was contesting the MCD poll as an Independent candidate. Many parties and local leaders had supported Rahman who fought the elections from Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad.
His loss suggests that the community may have sympathy with him and other youths picked in terror cases because they think they are innocent, but they want to keep the issue separate from politics. Similar results came yesterday from Malegaon where two accused of Malegaon blast were defeated in the local municipal election held on 15th April. Like Zakir Nagar, Malegaon is also a Muslim-dominated area.
Overall, the MCD results have gone in favor of ruling BJP with the party emerging way ahead in all three municipalities of Delhi, namely East Delhi, North Delhi and South Delhi.
Of 272 seats, leads/results are available for 265 seats right now. BJP is leading in 142 seats while Congress in 78 seats.
