The US treasury department has allowed humanitarian and religious organisations to carry out charity works in the country, the Mizzima News reported Thursday.

The move will allow US citizens to donate money in humanitarian projects in Myanmar, including disaster relief works, refugee and sanitation programmes.

However, US sanctions on commercial transactions, such as import of Myanmerese gemstones and other goods, are still in place.

Pro-democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy had registered a thumping victory in the April 1 by-elections by winning 43 of the 44 seats.
