Islamabad : The contempt of court by Yousuf Raza Gilani “tends to bring this court and the judiciary of this country into ridicule”, said the Supreme Court order convicting the prime minister after he refused to write to the Swiss authorities to reopen a corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari.
Gilani was Thursday convicted for contempt of court and awarded a symbolic sentence of about 30 seconds by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court, reported by Geo News, said that “the contempt committed by him is substantially detrimental to the administration of justice and tends to bring this Court and the judiciary of this country into ridicule”.
“As regards the sentence to be passed against the convict we note that the findings and the conviction for contempt of court… are likely to entail some serious consequences… which may be treated as mitigation factors towards the sentence to be passed against him,” the order added.
