Jammu : The end point of an underground tunnel dug from Pakistan to push terrorists and weapons into Jammu and Kashmir has been found, police said Wednesday.
The discovery was made by a geological team carrying out excavation of the area in Samba district where the tunnel was stumbled upon.
Police officials told IANS that the end point of the tunnel was distinct in shape. While the tunnel is oval shaped, the end is a semi-circle.
“The semi-circle may be meant to provide space for gathering people,” an official said.
“We are still working on finding the opening. It could be at some other place.”
The oxygen pipes laid along the tunnel too end at this point.
The end of the tunnel found is about 15 metres ahead of the place where the tunnel was discovered by a farmer on July 28 when he noticed that the ground was sinking in his field near Chichwal village.
The village is close to Chilyari border post, about 55 km southwest of Jammu.
The tunnel is believed to be 500 metres long, and Pakistani’s Lambryal border post is also this distance away from where the tunnel was discovered.
The geological experts are digging out more details about the tunnel, the first of its kind discovered on the India-Pakistan border.
Police and Border Security Force officials believe the motive behind constructing the tunnel by Pakistan was to facilitate the infiltration and smuggling of arms and ammunition.
They noted that digging a tunnel at such flat plain was easier than any mountainous part of the Line of Control, which divides Jammu and Kashmir b between India and Pakistan.
Indian security agencies claim that stepped up vigil on the border and the border fencing has reduced the infiltration of militants from Pakistan to negligible levels.
