Spartak beat Fenerbahce 2-1 in the first leg of their playoff tie Tuesday.

Photos from the match show Spartak fans holding a picture of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey and a revered figure for many Turks, upside down and reports that the image was later burned have sparked anger on Fenerbahce fan sites.

“Our site is still under attack from Turkish hackers,” Spartak said on Twitter on Thursday morning, after the site was unavailable for much of the night.

The club did not say how it had identified the hackers as Turkish.

The return match takes place in Turkey Wednesday.
