Kolkata : Condemning the BJP for stalling parliament proceedings for the last few days over the “presumed loss” from allocation of coal blocks, former deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha K. Rahman Khan Friday said opposition was not doing justice to the confidence of the people.
“It is presumption that there has been so much loss. The CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) has very clearly said that it may happen. My estimate may differ from yours. We respect whatever be the presumption of the CAG, but let us not confuse the people,” said K. Rahman Khan. The Congress MP was speaking on the sidelines of a conference organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
The CAG last week revealed that lack of transparency in the allocation of coal blocks to private players resulted in the loss of a whopping Rs.1.85 lakh crore ($37 billion) to the exchequer.
The union government Friday rejected its auditor’s report, saying the notion of presumptive loss is flawed.
“As a parliamentarian, I hate disruptions of parliament. If we disrupt the house, we will not be doing justice to the confidence of the people as parliament is a place for debate and discussion. We can hold the government responsible through debate and not by stalling parliament,” he said.
Both houses of parliament were repeatedly adjourned for the fourth consecutive day Friday as the BJP kept up its demand for the prime minister’s resignation over irregularities in allocation of coal blocks.
