Kolkata : Apprehensive of their security after a scuffle in the West Bengal assembly, Congress Legislative Party members led by leader Mohammad Sohrab Tuesday met governor M.K. Narayanan seeking his intervention in the matter.
“We apprised the governor about what happened inside the house today and gave him a memorandum seeking his intervention in the matter,” Sohrab said after meeting Narayanan.
The assembly Tuesday witnessed unruly scenes as the Left Front and the ruling Trinamool Congress members indulged in fisticuffs, resulting in three legislators being injured and hospitalised and suspension of three others.
The fracas broke out when the Left Front moved an adjournment motion over the state government’s alleged failure to curb chit funds in the state.
“We have seen that some MLAs, including from the ruling party, started beating some opposition members, including female members. We feel insecure inside the house and want to say that if this situation continues, what will happen outside,” added Sohrab.
Describing the incident as unfortunate and unprecedented, Congress leader Manas Bhunia urged all members, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to resolve the issue.
“We painfully had to observe that the speaker (Biman Banerjee), who is from the ruling party, preferred to watch the whole scene as a mute spectator. He did not make any efforts to control the situation,” said Bhunia.
“The opposition can provoke but the ruling party needs to be patient and tolerant. How can they be intolerant and impatient,” he asked.
