50 civilians rescued in J&K

Srinagar : The army rescued at least 50 civilians trapped on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway near Banihal tunnel last week, an official said Monday.

The civilians were stranded due to heavy snowfall on the highway Dec 13.

“On the request of traffic police, a rescue team of one officer and 20 personnel of 9 Rashtriya Rifles rushed to rescue the stranded civilians at 11.30 p.m. Dec 13,” a statement said.

“The army column not only provided initial comfort, but helped the civilians in turning their vehicles and guiding them towards Srinagar. Braving extreme cold weather, the column evacuated all the trapped civilians to safety by 3.30 a.m. Dec 14,” it said.

The rescued civilians included two new-born twins and their parents.
