Speaking at the two-day state committee meeting of the CPI-M that ended Tuesday, state secretary Biman Bose said the party needs to begin preparations for the coming panchayat polls without delay.

He said the party-led Left Front has to move with the resolve to give candidates in all the seats despite hurdles put up by the opponents.

“The fight against the conspiracy to destroy the three-tier panchayat system in the state has to be launched by rallying the rural masses. We have to change the current political balance by intensifying the democratic rights of the people,” a media statement quoted Bose as saying.

The state committee called for building up struggles on the people’s demands to cash in on their increasing resentment with the problems in public life.

The statement said representatives from various districts alleged the ruling Trinamool Congress had forcibly taken over many panchayats by using terror to make the elected Left Front members inactive.

“In many areas, the elected LF panchayat members are being made to work in contravention of the rules and against their will. Rural development has come to a halt. There are unbridled irregularities and corruption. There are lot of instances of the administration ignoring the elected panchayat bodies,” the statement said.

“The administration is being forced to work in the interests of the ruling party,” the Left alleged.
