Demand for declaring AMU as minority institution on Minority Day

Aligarh: “United Nations had fixed the responsibilities of the safety of minority sections on the respective governments of the country. Indian Constitution has ensured safeguards for minorities but in the last two decades, a strange perversion has been taking in the concept and the government has failed to provide security to minorities,” said Dr. Muhib –ul –Haq of Political Science Department, AMU while addressing a panel discussion on status of Minority Rights on Global Level organised by the Forum of Muslim Studies & Analysis (FMSA).

Delivering presidential address, Prof. Razaullah Khan pointed out that Islam had ensured rights of minorities. He said that the rights of religious and linguistic minorities should be translated into actions for the progress of the nation.

Secretary Jasim Mohammmad, raising the issue of the minority character of AMU, said that history testifies that AMU was established by Muslims and now questions are being raised about its minority status. He demanded that the government should declare AMU a minority institution by parliamentary legislation.

AMU EC member, Dr. Mohammad Shahid pointed out that the step of HRD minority to bring AMU Under National Eligibility Test for MBBS admission is “interference in internal matter of AMU and that will not be tolerated.”

Prof. Shamim Ahmad raised the Gujarat Genocide and questioned and where is minority right? Eminent scientist Prof. Humayun Murad said that the government should safeguard interest of every section of Indian society.

FMSA passed a resolution demanding that AMU should be declared a minority institution through parliamentary legislation and be exempted from National Eligibility cum – Entrance Test.

A number of teachers and scholars were also present in the discussion.
